Water shortage has always remained a major problem in most parts of Azad Kasmir through out the year, specially in drought seasons. But lot of opportunities exist to save that water which go waste & can be used for a number of purposes ie agriculture, livestock rearing, vegetable cultivation & orchard development. During rains, rain water from the top roofs of the houses can be successfully collected & stored and used later for a variety of purposes. Maqsood Welfare Foundation, in collaboration of OXFAM, has launched ‘Rain Water Harvesting Project’ in one of the Union Council of District Bagh, which was severely hit by earth quake in 2005. Water collectors were installed round roofs of 50 houses, One Rural Health Center [RHC], Two High Schools, One Mosque, costing Rs. 2,148,500/=,($35,221). This initiative will help almost 620 individuals, particularly women who are mainly responsible for fetching water for their family’s use. At RHC, not only the residential staff will be benefited by this project but at OPD where daily almost 90 to 100 patients come to get the treatment, are also beneficiaries of this project. At schools 470 boys, 346 girls and 37 staff members will be benefited by this project, where as at mosque indirectly all the village community will be benefited by this facility. The water thus collected / saved would be used initially for agriculture purpose, later by applying some techniques, could also be used for drinking purpose.
